Ruby alternative

A Ruby alternative for businesses tired of counting receptionist minutes

Ruby answers your calls with live receptionists and bills you for receptionist minutes. MairyAI answers them with an AI on a flat monthly plan, tells every caller so in the first sentence, books the appointment while they are on the line, and writes the call up afterward. The receptionists are not the reason people leave; the meter usually is.

This page sets out what actually differs, what Ruby does better than us, and the four things worth settling before you give notice to any answering service.

What you are paying for

Where the bill comes from

The complaint that repeats across every provider we researched is the same one, and it is not about the receptionists. It is about what the meter counts.

01

The meter is wider than the call

A minute meter counts more than the conversation. Providers variously count hold time, the time a receptionist spends writing up the call after the caller has hung up, the time a line rings before anyone picks up, and the time spent patching a call to you. Several say so in their own help centers.

02

Spam is usually billable

Wrong numbers, robocalls and hang-ups come out of the same bundle at most providers, and manual blocking is usually the only remedy offered. A bad week of spam is a bad invoice.

03

Nothing carries over

Unused minutes generally do not roll over, and overage usually bills a month in arrears, so the bill that tells you it was a busy month arrives after the month is over.

04

What we do instead

MairyAI is a flat monthly plan with minutes included and the rate printed on the page: MairyAI starts at $199 a month for Starter, with Premium at $499 and Pro at $1,499 by call volume. Setup is included, billing is month to month, and the free trial gives you 50 minutes of calls on a real business number with no card required.

Where they are the better choice

What we do not do

Three kinds of call where a staffed service beats us, said plainly, because a comparison that concedes nothing is not worth reading.

01

Callers who need another language

Your Voice Agent answers in English. If a meaningful share of your callers would rather speak Spanish, a provider with bilingual staff serves them better than we do today.

02

Outbound calling

MairyAI answers inbound calls and never places outbound ones. Chasing a lead, confirming tomorrow's appointments or running a callback campaign is work we do not do.

03

Calls that need a person's judgment

Legal intake with conflict checks, medical triage, and any call where somebody has to exercise judgment nobody wrote down beforehand, are jobs for a trained person.

04

How to tell which you are

Ruby has run for over twenty years, staffs US receptionists across more than a dozen states and holds bar-association programs in several of them. If those are your calls, the honest answer is that we are not the upgrade, and a trial on your own number is the cheapest way to find out rather than take anyone's word for it.

Before you give notice

The switching checklist

Four things worth settling before you tell anyone you are leaving. None of them is specific to us, and the first one is the one businesses lose.

01

Settle the number first

Find out whether the number your customers call is one you own or one the provider issued. If they issued it, moving it is a port, not a settings change, and several providers will only release a number while the account is open and in good standing. Start that before you cancel, not after.

02

Get your records out

Ask in writing for your call history, messages, recordings and transcripts, and ask how long they are kept after an account closes. Several providers set a retention clock, and at least one says plainly that customers cannot access recordings at all. Pull what you need while you still can.

03

Read the notice period

Read your own notice period before anything else. Month to month rarely means leave today: notice periods of a month are common, minimum terms exist, and a final invoice often arrives after service has stopped because usage bills in arrears.

04

Keep the script you paid for

Whatever a script, an escalation list or an on-call rota took months to get right is the asset that is hardest to rebuild. Export it, or write it down, before the account closes.

Common questions

The things worth knowing first

What is the main difference between MairyAI and Ruby?

Ruby staffs every call with a live receptionist and bills receptionist minutes. MairyAI answers with an AI on a flat monthly plan, discloses that in the first sentence, books into your calendar during the call and writes every call up. One is people you rent by the minute; the other is a line that is always answered.

Why do people look for a Ruby alternative?

In public reviews the recurring subject is the bill rather than the receptionists, who are praised consistently. Reviewers on Trustpilot, G2 and Capterra repeatedly raise how quickly cost scales with use, minutes rounded up, hold time counted, and spam calls consuming the plan.

Does the Voice Agent handle calls as warmly as a receptionist?

Not in the same way, and that is the honest answer. A good receptionist reads a caller better than any software. What MairyAI offers instead is the same answer every time, at two in the morning and in the middle of a busy Tuesday, with the whole call written up afterward.

Can I keep my existing phone number?

Yes. Forward the number your customers already know, or start on a new business number that we set up with you. Nothing about your existing phone system has to change.

Will callers know they are talking to an AI?

Yes. Your Voice Agent states in the greeting of every call that the caller is speaking with an AI assistant and that the call is recorded. Callers stay on the line because the voice is natural and the answers are right, not because anyone is misled. The disclosure is part of our terms and is never switched off.

Does MairyAI book appointments into my calendar?

Yes. MairyAI books into Google Calendar, Microsoft Outlook or the built-in calendar, on free time only, against a named member of your team, and emails the caller a confirmation you wrote once.

What does MairyAI cost?

MairyAI starts at $199 a month for Starter, with Premium at $499 and Pro at $1,499 by call volume. Setup is included, billing is month to month, and the free trial gives you 50 minutes of calls on a real business number with no card required.

Is my call data secure?

Recordings and transcripts are kept for thirty days and then deleted, with the date printed on the page. Call content is used to deliver the service and never to train AI models. You can download or erase the whole workspace from inside the product.
